Japan 2001 Science, Creativity and the Young Mind Workshop
Bristol July 23-30, 2001
APPENDIX 10
RESULTS
STUDENT EVALUATION
QUESTIONNAIRE
Questionnaires were distributed to students on 28 July. The majority were returned on or before the day of departure, 30 July, although a small number of responses were received by post subsequently. Other evaluations have been obtained from certain Team Leaders and from Facilitators, and are reported elsewhere.
Japanese students UK students Total
Number responses 28 26 54
Total number students 30 30 60
Percentage response 93% 87% 90%
Individual tick box responses are scored from 1 to 5, as indicated in bold italics, and the average score recorded (sum divided by number of respondents) for each question for Japanese students, for UK students and for all students.
The Japanese students responded in English (with one exception). This was not a requirement and this should be made clearer to students on any future occasion. It would have been better if Japanese student responses had been recorded in Japanese (and translated subsequently) so that the Japanese students could have been more precise and forthright with their opinions. Even so they have made some very important points.
The responses are given beside the questions as posed on the Questionnaires.

1.3 a) any aspects you found particularly valuable, enjoyable, stimulating
UK comments:
- using scanning electron microscope; very interesting
- I especially enjoyed the video link with NASA because we all came together to work as a team and it felt as if we were all on the same level
- the work was so interesting and meaningful
- the opportunity to see how things are done in university
- everything well organised and thought out
- further encouraged me to do medicine
- I found the fact that we were made to do research on our own valuable as it made me more aware of how to do it in the future
- I found all aspects enjoyable, especially being able to choose our own research question and doing things which have not already been done
- I found it valuable to have to work with one particular partner as it meant I got to know them well. I loved working with proper scientists!
- the experiments- applying science to real life
- working with the Japanese people; visiting the Environment Agency
- having REAL hands on experience
- the depth to which we investigated our subject was very good. Our team leaders, Carsten and Stewart, were brilliantly inspiring and encouraging. The NASA link was great too.
- being able to work with people from all over England and Japan was a very good experience
- good socialising
- putting physics, like fundamental frequency and standing waves, into the context of buildings (earthquake engineering). I won’t forget it
- the facilitators were very helpful in making sure that we all knew what we were supposed to be going
- I enjoyed working with the Japanese girls (this group was entirely of women); it was not only a challenge but a very interesting experience
- towards the end of the week, I felt the Japanese people were more confident and tried to communicate more, which was successful and therefore we had more fun and gained more from each other
- it has developed my skills in reaching a problem from different perspectives
- I found our debate on the bushmeat trade very interesting as it was an issue me and some of the others in our group hadn’t even heard of
- writing a play is very intriguing for me because I’ve actually never done drama before. It is very stimulating and exciting acting on stage.
- interaction with people particularly doing the questionnaires (Environment Team). Getting to study new areas of Bristol I personally haven’t covered. Plus the fact that we were hopefully going to make a difference by sending report to Tony Blair and the Council.
- communicating with people from different countries in other ways than talking, ie through gestures and images, was a valuable experience. Getting to know the group, including leaders and facilitators, was enjoyable.
Japanese comments:
- I made friends. I learn many things. I can experiment.. precious activity
- I could understand that density can be able to change; pyroclastic flow
- My interest in science became higher than before
- video conference with NASA; researching volcano on Mars
- British people helped us much
- I could make friends, know more about British, and know more about animal behaviour. I really want to know more about wild animals, not animals which are kept.
- I can see and feel some experiments practically. And seeing how the structure I made (Earthquake Engineering team) broken was really impressive.
- to try speaking British friends
- I was very glad to learn how British students think. It was very interesting for me who had never been abroad. And of course I studied English very much
- I experimented about chemistry. I made many friends
- To visit Airbus and collaboration work with British students before presentation
- I could spend time with really special people I would never know if it were not for this
- (preparing) questionnaire; observation (Environment Team)
- talking with team leaders, facilitators, students and asking questions of people on the road was so fun (Environment Team)
- I could do some things. For example I experimented in chemistry. I spoke with English students
- I have self confidence in my speaking English
- the time with friends
- I enjoyed talking with our members in English. At first I hesitated to speak English, but now I like to speak English and sometimes say "Yeah" or "Yes" to Japanese teachers
- excavation; bone analysis (Archaeology Team)
- science included not only chemistry or environment but archaeology
- I can understand about how British science is, a little
- I really enjoyed my project with specialists and good friends
- hearing various thoughts; I found everyone have so different but some part is same opinion
- I could express my opinion. I became to be good at speaking English a little
- discussing with students from England and Japan
- With British students, I could study about Environment of Bristol. It is the most valued I think. Especially discussion was very good
- To visit museum and excavation; everything!
1.3 b) any aspects you found particularly difficult, dull, disappointing
UK comments:
- waiting for the mixture to emulsify
- the only disappointment was when I realised how much I miss talking to Joe (NASA scientist) over the video link
- none
- the tedious nature of chemistry experiments
- not enough interaction between the Japanese students and the others
- communication, interpretation should have been a bit more prepared, even though they worked extremely hard
- maybe too much time spent going over thing we had already talked about but this was probably necessary for the Japanese students... wasn’t at all boring
- first day of introduction would have been more interesting if we had moved more quickly into the project.
- none really
- the presentations meant Friday was very rushed and we couldn’t continue our investigations too far
- I was disappointed my model did not win, but we came second and it was fun watching them get destroyed (making a model structure to withstand an earthquake)
- the emphasis on the presentations at the end was unnecessary and anti-climactic. I would have preferred to spend the time in further investigation
- not anything particularly
- lot of sitting around doing nothing
- communication was a bit of a problem n our team because we worked in pairs at different locations around Bristol Zoo and the facilitators were not always there
- I wish our play (Science through Theatre team) could have been made slightly longer
- the beginning of the week (Monday) was very difficult as no one knew each other and the first part of the experiment was very boring and I did not think it would get any better, but it did.
- preparing a presentation was quite difficult for the Ethics in Medicine team, as we discussed issues rather than getting them down on paper
- some of the work was slightly repetitive and wasn’t particularly difficult in some areas
- yes, trying to put all the suggestions you have together so that it makes sense is difficult, but it was exciting all the same
- covered work before and studied Bristol (Environment team), but did not mind so much because as the week went on I could see we were taking a different approach
- It was slightly disappointing that we could not do a more complex play (Science through Theatre team), but this was understandable considering the language barrier
Japanese comments:
- language
- formulas; I have not studied differentials and integrals
- English communication
- calculation of meteor impact
- English in the video conference is very technical and quick, so it was hard to understand
- I couldn’t understand English well. I think that if I had understood English better, the work would have been more valuable
- I wanted to understand every explanation and theory, but I often couldn’t understand it because of my poor English. But that made me think that I must learn English more and more harder.
- I felt that I didn’t speak English well. If I speak to our team friends, they couldn’t understand what I said. It was difficult for me to communicate with them.
- discussion
- chemistry
- I learnt about Mars from Carsten, but I couldn’t understand words about science
- language
- I found particularly difficult to discuss in English; I needed more vocabulary
- At the start of the Workshop it was hard to speak in English
- Communication (English)
- It seemed quite difficult for the Japanese students to understand English because everything went on so fast
- I couldn’t any science (Aeronautics Team)
- no
- I couldn’t speak and understand English so much, so I did not do many things. For example, sometimes I did not say my opinion because I thought I wouldn’t understand British’s reply to my opinion
- no
- to speak English and listen to English; to take a bath
- speaking English was the most difficult. But I could break this "language wall"
- the term was too short
- At first I couldn’t understand English. It is different from my imagination
- language. My team spent almost all time in discussion. It was very very very hard to take part in high speed discussion (Medical Ethics team)
- there was only one difficulty. I don’t have a very large English vocabulary, so if it were not for the facilitator, I couldn’t participate in the role playing (thinking about "bush meat")
- I wanted to argue more with British people
- promote a better understanding in English
1.3 c) how the work in your team compares with/differs from/makes use of/adds to your school work
UK comments:
- this workshop was a very good opportunity to use the skills that I have learnt in school
- the work I did on space science was very interesting and it was a nice taster of research at university
- I learnt how to work in small groups
- similar to school work with developed aspects
- working and producing work as a group, not individually
- goes to much more detail... completely independent.. more responsibility... level not too far off ( too high) but much more individual thinking in team work
- lot of group work different; adds to genetic study of biology
- we do not do many discussions, so it was very different
- the work was quite similar in style to work done in biology, but the content was very different and more interesting
- it was more hands on. It seemed more purposeful and greatly added to my school work in developing concepts and putting them into context.
- develops the basic knowledge I get from school
- it definitely expands and makes real my geography studies
- gives some of our recent work a practical use. The "energy and light" evening added to physics
- the work was completely different from the kind of work we do in school, but I found I was able to apply the maths I had recently learned at school to solve problems in the Mars context
- In school we have deadlines, and not much choice
- it just shows how science is important and how seriously it is linked with every aspect of our life
- more team work required
- much more practical than just learning from a text book
- it has helped me to be more open in compromising my ideas to work successfully with others
- It definitely adds to my experience in theatre (Science through Theatre team) and is essential as part of key skills- communication
- we were shown what to do more on the course, but at school we have to work it out for ourselves (due to time restrictions), but the work we were doing at the end of the course was much more interesting and enjoyable that we do at school, using equipment we would never get to use at school.
- at school I am given all the necessary information along with all points of view on a topic by my teachers, whereas in Bristol I had the chance to carry out my own research on a topic and conclude my own opinions on the topic (Ethics in Medicine team)
- the work was very different from any of my school work, but was useful in learning new skills and ideas
- what I did in my team is the same as what I do in school, since it is science as well, but I have little information about genetically modified food. But after the workshop, I have loads of info about it, which is helpful.
- School work covered was very valuable in terms of producing the Report, which I had done many times during Geography GCSE/AS
- it differed in the sense that people in the group were along the same level of intelligence; this is not always the case at school. Also, most of the people at my school are English. I thought it good that everyone in my group spoke a different language at home, apart from me.
Japanese comments:
- I realize what we study is very essential
- I had not known anything about volcanoes, but I learnt something about volcanoes in this workshop, so I could gain ground
- I use the ideas of biology in my school
- school teaches only the formula or calculation, but the Workshop is researched into deeply by myself
- it was exciting and more interesting than my school work
- I have never learned about animal behaviour like this in my school work
- it is practical
- in the High School, I read textbooks and I am taught study by teachers, but here I had to think everything myself and do my work; I could make my opinions
- more difficult
- I joined vulcanology team, and I did many many experiments. I felt freshness for it
- I experimented a thing which I have never had ever
- I joined vulcanology team, and I did many many experiments. I felt freshness for it
- All English; and teachers spoke very fast
- it was my first time to hear anything like "Science through Theatre". Everything was new and was a great experience. I don’t know how it would be used in my school life
- everyone has own idea firmly in this workshop
- maybe I came not to be afraid speaking in English
- it was so different from my school. Lesson in my school was often passive, but this was not. So it was very hard, but I did actively
- it’s very different. For example, we have little discussion in our class in Japan
- we don’t study about Mars deeply, but in this Workshop I have been very excited because we can study deeply what I am really interested in
- extraordinary
- all students have their individual opinion
- people focused more about the whole concept of the experiment, rather than the accuracy of the experiment
- in my school we don’t have role play
- if I said my opinion, our teacher always said "why?". This point is very different
- when we express our opinion, we must say its reason; what exchange opinions with them
- I realized that I should insist what I think. It’s really important to express myself at school
- I feel freedom in this workshop. It is difference my school. I was thinking every time about Environment. I could enjoy "learn".
- everything!
1.3 d) how, if at all, the work in your team has changed your attitude to science, and its applications
UK comments:
- the work has made me realise that I would not want to do research in the future
- I feel as though I have gained a feel for a different aspect of science far from school work
- it has revealed the long processes that scientists have to go through
- science requires cooperation- (one) cannot benefit fully alone
- I now have real experience of what science really is; it is very important, especially working together internationally
- enhanced my view of the applications of genetics
- I will lay out my plan better and start more focused
- it has encouraged me to think about doing zoology at university and made me realise not everything has already been researched/investigated in science
- I have realised that what we observe can be investigated and problems solved. I have also learnt how to structure an investigation into a problem and how important observation is.
- made me see how important and involved science is in real life
- it seems more real; applicable to everyday life
- I thought science was fab before and I think science is fab now; maybe a bit more fab
- It has made me appreciate the reality of the application of science. When at school, I was learning the science without being able to apply it; now I know what REAL science is like; I love it!
- well, it has changed my opinion about how important it should be. Its imperative it should be stressed a lot in all careers.
- lot of work involved
- I have learnt about some of the different aspects of practical science; I would consider a degree in civil engineering
- science is a universal subject that can connect people from different cultures
- science is obviously being ignored in theatre... although quite interesting
- I have realised that chemistry and most other sciences involve a lot of boring aspects which need a lot of patience and I don’t know whether I would want to spend 3 years doing that; I need to think more about WHY I want to do a subject
- it hasn’t really changed my attitude very much; it has made me see that science is varied
- yes, it has because after hearing about GM foods, it actually persuaded me not to eat them even if there were no more food left in the world due to its long term effects not yet known
- Not changed my attitude because I loved it even before I came- this was just a back up to my enjoyment of it
- I thought science was enjoyable before, but I now realise that there are different ways of learning about it that can make it enjoyable for everyone.
Japanese comments:
- at first we were out to win, but we enjoyed
- experiment is very important. we should try some experiments. experiments told us what science is
- observation is very important
- I saw only one angle before going here. But I could see a different angle
- British students had a lot of knowledge about science. I thought I had to study harder
- I know that I can’t understand international science if I can’t understand English
- through the Workshop, my interest in physics really increased
- my opinions for science which I had before is changing. I think science is not easy, but I can do it
- I thought chemistry is quite difficult
- from the first I have been excited at this Workshop
- I found that science is useful for our daily life
- both English and Japanese have individual opinions and their personalities; it was so high level. It stimulated for me, so I thought very interesting to learn science
- if I was it, I would have been matched the work
- I felt there are many ways to study science, not only studying on the desk
- I found that science is not only in the laboratory
- it gave me a completely different point of view!
- I studied such science, so I think that I must study English and science more and more.
- in Japan, we do experiments exactly to approximate to the nature terms. But I learned that sometimes we don’t have to think about it so seriously. And I learned how science is wide subject
- I’m always thinking of science seriously, so my mind didn’t change
- I think I’ll look at the Earth more and more. And exert myself in it
- I’ve learnt a lot of things that I didn’t know. Actually I’ve never thought of GM food before.
- at first I think that science is very difficult, but now I think that it is very interesting
- I think if I have my opinion, it is very important to say it as long as positive and quickly
- in Wildlife team, checking bat’s behaviour, I realized how important to make steady efforts
- I thought archaeology is literature subject, but through this Workshop archaeology is scientific subject
1.3 e) what advice you would give to enhance this aspect of any future Workshop
UK comments:
- supply drinks on the video conference; it does get quite hot
- any future workshop should be arranged exactly the same as this successful one
- more on the process that is being used
- a greater level of Japanese on behalf of the English students in order to enhance communication
- encourage more social activities between the Japanese and British students as well as teachers; train translators
- make sure all teams are aware of certain things for presentations, eg Powerpoint
- we should be given another group session with our scientists so that we could plan and make a start on our report.
- people should try to get their first choice of team
- you could also have a maths-based group; a geology (eg fossils etc) based group
- not having to do a written report. The presentation is recorded- that should be sufficient I think
- For the Space Science Workshop, we had to work for extra afternoons (this refers to the fact that the video conference with NASA in the USA was timed for every afternoon, which made it not possible for the team to take part in some of the visits) which I found very useful, so for following Workshops I would advise to plan more full days spent on project work
- better organised free time/fun time eg bowling
- improve the quality of the food and lay on more transport; stop academic work at 4.00pm and have breakfast later
- explain more about what you will actually be doing in the Workshop before people will decide which one. Give more information to people before they arrive, as I did not know much about anything before I came. I think it is good to be able to do hands on work, but the work needs to be chosen carefully to keep the interest of the people doing it
- it will be good if future students can prepare their own case study on the topic they will be looking at. It can be kept as a record of their achievement and cna be used to base their presentation on
- possibly by making the work a bit more challenging; also by adding a bit more variety in the work
- none, because everything worked out perfectly. I would love to come for any future Workshop you’re organising please
- the presentation was rushed and more time was required. Also, you could perhaps set each group a scientific challenge specific to the area of study so they have a focus point s our team had to look at a wide variety which took up a lot of time, although it was very interesting
Japanese comments:
- make the experiment valuable
- I think British people and Japanese people should stay in the same room (share accommodation?)
- wildlife team should do longer time
- maybe before going to the Workshop you should (?) hard about it
- Japanese students have to study using a computer and speaking English
- I did my research with my one partner. I think that the research can be changed into good or bad by the partner; that point is important
- you should choose good English speakers
- I want to say to new students: You don’t have to do all things perfect, and you should think positive slant on present situation
- I have no idea
- I think I would like to show information to students before Workshop. I don’t encourage to use private company (Aeronautics team)
- I really wish it was longer, even just for one more week...
- it must be your treasure
- the days were so hard and we had social programmes in nights; I couldn’t have enough time to sleep. please start social programmes much earlier. the meal was hard
- I think you should give some informations of workshop; the informations are what and how we do the workshop
- I think members of the Workshop want details of the subject in it. And I want more time (more days) for it
- Rania, this is our team member, taught me how to calculate energy of impact. I was surprised at student’s wisdom. I make up my mind studying hard
- please change the date for shopping (not Sunday because every shop is closed)
- have your individual opinion
- we need more time to do experiments or activities; I’m happy if we can have more time
- if you gave us more information quicker, like what we study in the UK, we could have prepared more and we can suggest more ideas maybe
- it is better to connect with each other, between English and Japanese in early time
- make longer period of the Workshop please; please give the students more information
- more Japanese students should put power into English and should strive for the substantial workshop
- you should choose a good English speaker (Japanese)
1.3 f) anything else
UK comments:
- I really appreciate everyone’s work on this workshop; thank you everyone!
- I am so pleased of the great work Mr Eric Albone and his team did. Thanks a lot.
- everything was fine
- no
- we had a tour round the School of Biological Sciences with a zoology professor; this was very helpful as it related to what we were doing and what courses I’m thinking of doing at university
- the presentation should have been given more time.
- Yes, it was the most remarkable experience I have ever had in my life. IT WAS GREAT!!
Japanese comments:
- nothing
- nothing
- nothing
- nothing
- I felt our discussion based on our accepted knowledge. I wish I learned more about medical ethics before coming here. I didn’t have any subject before leave. I read about medical ethics a little, but it wasn’t enough

2.3 Please add any further comments you wish, in particular
2.3a) any aspects which made the experience particularly valuable, enjoyable, rewarding
UK comments:
- learning about their culture and telling them about ours
- working with people from all over the world
- I have learnt couple of things during this workshop.. investigations, experiments and excavation
- the fact that we could communicate easily through the language of science
- sense of accomplishment
- learning about another culture; language; awareness of the world; experience of real science and its applications; university life, using oral skills
- making friends with Japanese people
- aware that if I made an effort (however small) it was worth it
- everyone was very friendly and the Japanese students got more confident about talking in English
- A chance to talk not just about science but also about culture
- I saw how the Japanese students English improved greatly over the one week
- the evening put on by the Japanese students was the most fun, but please give them a microphone next time. I have hearing problems so a mic would have helped
- being able to work with someone who speaks a different language
- the social evenings were very good and helped us mingle with each other and enjoy
- foreign friends
- working and socialising with Japanese people helped me learn a lot about their culture
- I enjoyed recording the activity of the seals and preparing the presentation. The Workshop Dinner was also really good.
- we watched "Sweet as You Are" play written by Jonathan, which was good
- it was hard to communicate with the Japanese people, but when you could it was very rewarding and at the end of the week I felt we all got on very well; I found it very interesting to learn about their culture
- I found learning about the Japanese culture and the language very enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed the presentation they (the Japanese students) gave for us on their culture and I was really glad I was able to take part; it was interesting to learn about origami, for example
- being able to speak Japanese, being a British student, was very exhilarating for me
- learning about a new culture, learning a new language, and making new contacts which hopefully in future will result in exchanges. Also having visits, being able to show Japanese friends some British culture and having a great time ourselves
- I learnt a lot about another culture in one week. This made me realise how much I could learn in a year, which makes me more adamant to take a gap year to travel. I also made some good friends from Japan, which I keep in touch with (this response was sent by post after the end of the Workshop) and I have had offers to stay with them.
Japanese comments:
- communicating
- the wall of language is thin; we can triumph over the wall through science
- the wall of language is very thin
- two years ago I went to England; then I spoke with different foreigners who are French, Italian, Spanish and so on.
- British people are very kind
- I experienced the joy that I can understand thinking of British and I can tell my thinking to British
- I can make friends in UK
- to communicate with Japanese and British new friends
- I really enjoyed talking with British students
- I know another culture through an interchange
- I enjoyed talking with people have other cultures. I played UNO. I lose four times
- staying at dormitories with a lot of people both Japanese and English
- making friends with people from the UK
- all the students and people in the city were very kind
- I used some machines which I have never used; I was glad the experience
- It made me excited to discuss in English. It was very difficult, but so fun!
- the dinner after the presentation
- it is very enjoyable for me to talk with members in Britain
- living with British students
- everything!
- the Environment Team to which I belonged made the Workshop for me that worthy. It is because conversation became lively and it very much enjoyed itself in the female team (no young men by chance were in this team)
- friendship
- when talking with my team’s members
- I had felt very worried about my poor English, but if I try to tell my opinion as long as possible, I can tell it
- all work I did in my project, like watching carefully bats, role playing, making presentation with Jenny, studying about bush meat, and so on
- we could change (exchange?) our thoughts with British students for the first time for our lives
- understanding different culture, both of students
2.3 b) any aspects which made the experience particularly difficult, disappointing
UK comments:
- at first the communication between the Japanese people and us was quite difficult, but we coped well
- the matrix printer (outmoded computer facility in the hall of residence).. it is very slow and noisy
- none
- the fact that we could not communicate as well through English
- language barrier; lack of activities in free time ie evenings
- communication slightly complicated but very much facilitated by translators and level of English of Japanese students
- being confined to Churchill Hall
- the language barrier made it quite difficult with certain words/phrases
- none
- I would have liked more chance to get to know people outside my group better.
- initially trying to communicate
- not knowing about the written report or the time for the presentation until the day before; organising activities for a Sunday from scratch also frustrating
- the language barrier was difficult, especially when using technical language, as was often required
- language barriers were difficult at times
- it was hard working with the Japanese students and the evening activities were unimpressive
- communication problems between us and two of the Japanese girls
- the language barrier; it was disappointing when people from Britain did not put in effort and did not try to get on with the people from Japan
- the only thing making it difficult was the language, but this wasn’t too much of a problem; nothing was disappointing about it apart from saying goodbye at the end
- no
- just the communication really, which pulled back the project work, but then I found it a valuable experience having to get over the barrier
- I was only disappointed that we did not spend more time with the Japanese people at night
Japanese comments:
- the food
- meals
- nothing especially
- English in the video conference was really tough
- I had my idea, but couldn’t tell it to British
- I realise that my English is really poor
- language
- I can’t speak English very well
- food
- talking with NASA is very very difficult. I couldn’t understand whole things
- work
- I was puzzled the gap between English and Japanese
- I experimented result is almost decided, so I think that I lacked to excite much more
- I am not sure at the way to use bath unit; it’s different from Japanese bath
- British people spoke fast
- British students didn’t speak slowly if even I said "please speak slowly" because I think they hadn’t come into contact with foreigner who can’t speak English
- (being?) understood myself
- as I didn’t speak English so well, I had a gap between my British team mates
- I am not a native English speaker, it is natural I need a lot of time to read data
- my poor English vocabulary was the most strong barricade
- barrier of the languages; the period is short
- at first I couldn’t understand British accent at all, so I am disappointed at it, but the more days I spent, I became to think that the language barrier was not a big problem
- only a few was bewildered by having been improper for outside line as for the telephone of a dormitory
- to speak English and listen to English; open the key
2.3 c) was this a new experience for you?
UK comments:
- I have done other workshops before, but working with Japanese people is a new experience
- yes, I have never done anything close to this before. I loved the work!
- I have been on summer schools before, though the cross cultural aspect was different
- yes
- yes, a truly first
- yes
- yes
- yes
- yes
- yes
- yes, because it was so concentrated (I have done school exchanges before)
- partly; I have been involved in cultural exchanges within Europe and have been on another course at a University. But hearing a language for the first time was new and a little scary, but fun
- absolutely, in terms of the science and in terms of the two cultures coming together
- yes
- yes
- no, I have been on a summer school at Sussex University and on a Sutton Trust summer school at Oxford University
- yes, I have never done a workshop before
- very new, as I hav not really met very many people from Japan. Also, I have learnt lots about other people’s culture who live in England (the UK team was multiethnic)
- it wasn’t being away from home, as I have been on other school field trips, but it was a new experience working and living with people from another country
- definitely, yes, and a lifetime one as well which will always be remembered
- yes. I have taken part in project work before, but not so scientifically based or with people from a different culture
- In a way, yes, for the length of time. It was a new experience, a very enjoyable experience
Japanese comments:
- yes
- yes
- yes it was
- yes it was
- yes, it was
- yes
- yes, this was
- yes
- yes, of course, and thank Dr Albone for everything!
- I went to Bristol University. I knew another culture, food, etc
- yes
- quite
- yes, it was
- yes, I haven’t been abroad before
- yes, it was
- it was undergoing(finding out?) how to buy food at a foodstore in free time (29 July)
- yes!!
- yes, it was
- yes
- yes, it was
- yes, it was. It was very lonely for the dormitory life to have come out for the first time, at first... although kicked when it got used. It was pleasant and was good the joy to which English is understood was great!!
- yes, it really was
- yes it was
- yes it was
- yes it was
- yes it was; I had never done like this workshop before
- yes
2.3 d) how, if at all, working/living with people from the other nation has changed your
attitudes
UK comments:
- it has made me realise how much differences we all have, yet we all have so much in common and that we can enjoy the differences instead of having conflicts
- interesting to see how their science compares well
- more culturally aware
- made me more aware of the world; how working together can make things easier
- more culturally aware
- in the group there was never one English side and one Japanese side, so I no longer view cultures as very different
- it has given be a greater understanding of their culture, and has been more enjoyable than I thought it would be. It was interesting to compare them with us. They seemed much more cheerful.
- I have realised that people from other nations have a lot to offer from an alternative viewpoint. Also that people who cannot communicate as well as others are not necessarily less intelligent.
- made me see how different we all are- but can work together so well
- I know more about Japan
- just reaffirmed the fact that I would like to live and do some of my study abroad
- as I am not English, I am well used to working with a diverse mixture of people, but usually without the language barrier
- much easier than I expected it to be
- I think it has made me more open minded; it broadens your view and gives more experience and benefit of knowing people of that place
- more sociable than expected
- I can now get on better with people from other cultures
- very much so.. diversity adds more intelligence
- I didn’t really have an attitude towards people from Japan in the first place, because I do not like to judge people without getting to know them first
- yes, because I have come to learn that people from other culture have their own cultural values, which I have learnt and is good
- hasn’t changed- just enhanced. I really love meeting people from other cultures – it fascinated me and so my attitude has always been a positive one
- it has changed my attitude a lot. I thought the Japanese were lovely people, and I have realised there is so much to learn about the world. Some of the English people seemed not to appreciate the valuable experience they were being given.
Japanese comments:
- culture difference
- I talked through volcano
- I talk with English students positively
- yes, I was encouraged to study
- I don’t know
- they said to me "hello" with smile, and I comfort with their kindness; I learn a lot of things by British friends. I hope I’ll tell them about Japanese things in English
- good idea
- I could share the feeling with British students
- I don’t know
- a little
- I found English have individual opinions and assert it, so I wanted to have my opinions
- I thought I don’t have to speak English correctly; I only have to think what to tell
- I thought I wanted to know people from the other nation and the difference of each culture
- I know a new culture which differs from us very much
- I was already used to these things
- I think I must be positive
- I became more positive than before
- I want to say students who will join the project like this; We can enjoy because there are people who have different character
- yes, attitude is changed more positive
- I realized that it was very difficult to understand foreign country’s culture
- I could respond to any reaction
- I found there are many different points, but also there are same points
- it made me to insist my opinion
- I’ve made good friends from Japan and from England. I’ve learnt a lot about English people’s view through talking with them
- Although not changed especially, it was going to enjoy itself
- I think that I should study English harder
2.3 e) what advice you would give to enhance this aspect of any future Workshop
UK comments:
- have more time to get to know each culture better
- more fluency in communications
- work with more science based organisations to enhance the scientific side
- better translation; more social activities
- the Japanese presentation (evening organised by the Japanese students) was a very good idea; perhaps the English should have done one too.
- definitely more integration of British and Japanese students
- supply a list of names with room number and room phone number so we know where our new friends are and who is in the room opposite
- I felt the lack of good translation for the Japanese students slowed us down. Translators with a strong knowledge in both languages as well as technical words is absolutely essential for future workshops.
- as a suggestion, you could take English students to Japan
- make sure the Japanese students have a better command of English
- better food... for better thinking
- play more games with both Japanese and English people, to bring them together
- I don’t think it can be enhanced anymore, but maybe difficulties with the language could be improved on.
- none, because everything worked out well
- as regards communication, there isn’t a lot you can do. Maybe produce a leaflet or something with scientific/practical terms with translations in Japanese and send them to the Japanese students before the Workshop
- Make sure that all English and Japanese students are willing to get on with people from different cultures, so that it is a bigger success.
Japanese comments:
- understand each other
- They should talk with English students positively
- I think it is very difficult to speak English, so you should study it harder
- Japanese students must ask things they do not know
- People who will join the Workshop have to have a desire
- it is too short for active working in the Bristol University, so you should have long time for any future Workshop
- we need more informations
- no
- please good food
- I don’t know
- I want more time for our communication
- nothing
- don’t be afraid to speak to foreigners!
- do something together in the social time; makes the students closer
- you should take more time for any future Workshop
- we should talk with English people more
- please have a party more; please make long(er) the period of Workshop
- let’s talk each other as long as possible
- if we could stay longer, we could have made better results. I wish I had more time
- emphasize yourself
2.3 f) anything else
UK comments:
- the whole experience helped me learn a lot about myself!
- none
- it would be good if we could have a route set up eg through the website by which we could keep up with the news of everyone. This would mean that we could keep up with everybody and keep together as a workshop group!
- overall, a really fun and memorable week. I’m sooooo glad I filled out the application form. Every minute has been memorable! THANK YOU!
- yes, this Workshop helped to bring the British and the Japanese people together and made everyone have a good understanding of each other. At least I’ll go home knowing how kind the Japanese people are, in case I come in contact with one of them.
- perhaps hold it in Japan

- laundrette needed
- the accommodation is good although the meals are less good
- breakfast was a little early
- very poor.. accommodation solitary...food will encourage me to go self-catering at University
- I really liked my room
- not much variety for vegetarians. Large quantity of food but not very good quality.
- I would have preferred the option of a cold meal/sandwich at one of the meal slots.
- the meals were quite healthy and tasty
- Churchill Hall pleasant; food grim
- meals; lunch good; breakfast very good; evening meals, not so good!
- the food in our accommodation area was atrocious
- the food at Hawthorns was great, but the quality at Churchill was not good
- dreadful food; unhygienic toilets and showers
- the food seemed to be a bit adventurous and was a bit of a disappointment
- I thought the rooms themselves were very good as were the meals, but some of the other people did complain about the food. Also, people from the same groups should have been accommodated nearer to each other
- the accommodation was absolutely fantastic, likewise the meals
- there was only one meal I couldn’t eat- the meatballs
Japanese comments:
- there was very good taste
- I like orange juice
- the bathroom wasn’t comfortable
- Japanese almost always eat rice or bread, and consider potato as one of side dishes, I think. so I want to eat bread or rice and a few potatoes instead of many potatoes.
- I think meals are very good, but the amount of meals is very much
- I was glad to have a single room
- I wish that there were Japanese tea (green tea)
- meals is soso
- breakfast is too much for me
- more bass mat (?)
- the room lights were dim, so I wish its lights are more bright
- the meals in Churchill Hall was hard to finish for me. It was too much for me.
- everything was too much for me
- the meals were a little hard for the Japanese to get used to
- I want to open the door more easy
- I think we should live in double room with British and Japanese students
- during my stay in the UK I got fat, so I think less oily food is better. But at most meals were good
- a shower room wasn’t very sanitary
- I wanted screen because insects came in the room. The meals are large for me
- accommodation... it was not good that the outside line of a telephone was turned off. Otherwise I have no problem meal... most didn’t suit my mouth. But chips, a fried egg and toast bread were delicious
- I don’t like British food

UK comments:
- more free time was needed for the Space Science team
- interesting although of no value to my project
- I learnt a lot
- perhaps a chance to spend longer at some of these places. Our visits were rather brief in some places.
- interesting places
- interesting rather than informative (except Jenner’s house)
- really enjoyable! Shame we could not spend a little more time at @Bristol. Perhaps split group in two and do one activity for the whole afternoon
- I did not attend any of the visits as our group had to do video conferences
- more time at the At Bristol place would be good
- I think people were too tired to benefit from the visits and some (eg the castle visit, for me as I have been before) were a waste of time. I think it would be better if you could choose.
- the visit to Explore at Bristol was valuable especially for my biology work. The visit to the Jenner Museum was a little dull in places but I found the visit to Berkeley Castle very interesting
- the Explore@Bristol was great, likewise the Edward Jenner Museum and the Zoo. I learnt many things from them.
- the zoo visit was really good. Parts of the Wildwalk@Bristol and Explore@Bristol visit were good by the exhibits were a bit childish, considering most of us were 17. The Edward Jenner museum was interesting but the Berkeley Castle was rather boring.
Japanese comments:
- I couldn’t go because I was in the Space Science team (but it was very good to join the video conference)
- I wanted to see more deeply
- The exhibitions is nice; I moved by them
- I enjoyed visiting zoo
- since I am a member of Space Science, I haven’t visited anywhere
- I was so excited; I don’t wish anything more
- At Bristol was so exciting; the visiting time was short
- I want to look more slowly and longer time
- I think it was good
- it was REALLY INTERESTING
- I wanted to visit some laboratories which is in the frontier of science
- I love to see museums, so that I really enjoyed all of them, especially Jenner’s museum
- the natural history museum (Wildwalk at Bristol) is very interesting and the science museum (Explore at Bristol) is very benefit to me
- It was very good! Although it is said country that it’s Bristol it’s an interesting science museum and is wonderful
- I enjoyed visiting the science museum

- Zoe rules!!
- a bit more trained or prepared first
- Hiro was very supportive and helped our group a lot
- Very supportive and helpful.
- couldn’t have been possible without the facilitator who brought the team together
- the facilitators English was not great, but this made the group communicate more
- they are a FAB fun group!
- they were extremely helpful and friendly
- they could have helped more with translations but this may mean the Japanese students do not try to speak as much English
- The facilitators were very helpful and supportive throughout the week
- They were the best team leaders I have ever had in helping to organise things. They really worked hard in helping us achieve our goals. Thanks to them all!!
- The Science through Theatre facilitator was brilliant. She joined in with things and helped when help was needed. The rest of the facilitators were friendly and helpful.
Japanese comments:
- I could enjoy my Workshop thanks to you. Thank you very much.
- they are very kind
- she worked very hard; she also made the Workshop fun
- she talked much; she was very nice

- thank you very much
- nothing
- I could communicate with the students for (with?) the facilitators’ support
- thank you Jo!!! our team couldn’t have had such a great time without her
- I was taught a lot of things from her (not only English)
- Go supported us in all respects. Without his help, the project fell through. I give many thanks to him
- my facilitator is very kind. I was help many times by him
- I relied on a facilitator of our team at first, but I realized it was not good and that I should try to understand by myself. I want to thank them for everything. I could enjoy this workshop because they helped me a lot.
- Our team leader Kim was great! She is smart!
- Thank you Miho. I love Miho.

UK comments:
- The organisation of events was excellent
- Evening activities very poor
- The organisation was excellent and it was very good knowing roughly what you were going to do each day
- I would have preferred less half hour gaps between events, but this was not a big problem!
- well organised in a short space of time
- have day of activities on Sunday and free day on Saturday... better for shopping! Also Formal Meal much better if we could have come back to the Hall even if only for half an hour; very awkward having extra bags (refers to fact that time did not allow group to go back to Hall of Residence on Friday following Public Presentations and the subsequent Workshop Dinner)
- the Saturday spent sight-seeing was boring even though I had never been to Bristol before; more interesting outings would have been better
- everything was well set
- fluctuated between good and bad
- I thought the organisation during the day with coaches for example was very good, although the evenings were not always organised well
- it was fantastic, the way everything was organised and taken care of. No one lacked anything or had problems. It was good.
- it would have been nice to know a bit more about the week, ie daily plan, because the end of the week got a bit confusing
- it was a very well organised event, which was necessary to make it the success it was
Japanese comments:
- I’m, happy to come here, I’m glad to come here, I’m glad to meet them
- I don’t know
- I received letters from Nihon-Kagakuka very late
- I wanted to know a detailed plan
- I think we need more time to do our project
- Workshop is very interesting. But I wanted to go to the hospital to study (ethics)
- I can participate and think that it was really good. It is thankful to Dr Albone!!
- I want to give me information of this workshop

- yes, it is a very good opportunity for students interested in science and its other aspects
- yes, if complaints are rectified
- definitely
- yes, because it has been really interesting
- yes, definitely... I’ll spread the good word!
- I don’t think I would come again as I have done it now, and I felt it would have been better if we spent more time doing science work in labs rather than visits and get things (science of what we are doing) explained to us more clearly
- definitely
- yes, I would want to attend a future workshop and any others who were interested I would encourage to apply for it
- definitely yes. I’ll even ask if I am permitted to come and I wish I would be permitted

- Yes, I would
- Yes, I want to take place in like this workshop
5. What is the single strongest impression of the Workshop?
UK comments:
- Wow! It is over my head. I’ve had one of the time of my life.
- young people learn how to work in small groups and express ideas how to apply science in each case.
- the reliable smoothness and planned organisation of events
- more insight into practical use/applications
- amount of material covered; depth and breadth of subject in 4 days. also presentations.
- good taste of Uni life
- how easy and quick friendships were made, but how strong they became.
- a very enjoyable, eye-opening week. Thank you!
- I have learnt loads, not just about science but an awareness of the world. It was both educational and enjoyable.
- I managed to do a written report and presentation on a subject I knew nothing about with people I did not know and yet to enjoy myself at the same time.
- new friends
- practical science in a friendly, informal setting
- the scientific impact it has had on me has left me greatly anticipating studying science at university and beyond
- people of similar ages from UK and Japan working together to produce successful presentations
- just the poor quality of food
- a chance to appreciate a new culture and maybe learn something new
- bad food
- a fantastic way to get to know people!
- I have learnt a lot about how chemists work during university. Japan is a very interesting place, and I would love to visit the country
- it was an unforgettable experience
- I thought it was a fun and original way of bringing young people form different countries together to work and live and to learn about each other’s cultures
- speaking both languages at the same time was a very good impression, because people who had not heard Japanese language before will be very excited to hear it, even when not asked to speak it.
- bridging two nations to work as one.
- it was a success
Japanese comments:
- challenge
- people were so kind to me
- I was surprised at new idea of science
- I think I studied very well. I will never forget all times which are eating dinner, workshop, playing soccer, and so on; this is the strongest impression
- it was really a very great experience
- friendship
- all the people participating in thw Workshop like and interested in science. I could work with such people and hear their opinion. And I could feel the culture of British people
- everyone in this workshop has strong character
- difficult
- it was very different from the one I imagined, but I enjoyed it and I learned a lot of things than I had thought. Thank you
- enjoyable!
- after all, I enjoy this workshop!
- studying archaeology
- my poor ability of English. I think that is very important for us to master English because if we cannot use English we can not insist (express?) what I want to say. So I will study English.
- the difference between Japan students and British students. But I also found the similarity. It must be very good experience
- all the students (except me) were so great!!
- it is communicating with people from the other culture and succeeding this Workshop together
- I made a lot of friends!!
- it is that you can have a great time as long as you don’t forget to make the effort!
- students discuss with different country students
- asked many questions for Ticca (Leader of Archaeology Team) of CEO of Bristol
- the difference between Japanese and British sights for science
- exchanging opinion each other, between British and Japanese; and working with specialists was so exciting!
- Dr Albone, because I was deeply impressed is positive action. I thought he is the model of leader; the other is people’s kindness. I helped many many people
- Workshop changed my impression of science!
- I worked with Science through theatre team members. I didn’t know what the other teams were doing, but at the presentation I was really surprised. They all have done a really good job.
- I was surprised at the height of the student’s level
- Everything
6. PLEASE GIVE ANY OTHER COMMENTS YOU WISH
UK comments:
- Thank you especially Dr Eric Albone
- This project should be repeated with other students and with other countries. It is a very good motivator to work hard in science, and to learn how to cooperate internationally
- Thank you.. this has been one experience I have learned form and that learning is vital to my future.
- A very valuable experience, not only for science but for social skills and overcoming barriers. If there are any further developments or anything I can help with, don’t hesitate to contact me. I would be very interested in helping.
- I feel so proud to have taken part in the workshop- thank you for giving me the opportunity. I’ll never forget it.
- After this week, I don’t understand why this has not been tried before. They all speak good English and we all got on very well! This week was best!
- On the whole I am very grateful I was fortunate enough to do the Workshop. It was an experience I will treasure for some time.
- The leaving time for British students should be made clearer at the beginning so that suitable transport arrangements can be made
- Everyone should leave the workshop at the same day; different arrangements should not be expected (a few students left earlier during the final weekend)
- I really had a great time. The workshop was fantastic and I enjoyed myself very much. It was a great experience
- I think there was a lot of time wasted during the day just sitting around and it would have been better if we were allowed extra time in bed instead
- Overall, I thought the workshop was a success, and I hope you will be doing another one in the future, and I would just like to say thank you for a really good week
- At the beginning of the week, communication was a problem, but now it has been overcome and everything is exciting. All you lots of scientists out there, if you have the opportunity to attend the Japan 2001 Workshop, do not hesitate/turn it down, ‘cause you’ll regret it!! Thanks to Eric Albone and the Head of the Japanese Chemical Society and everyone who contributed in making the Workshop successful. It was great and I’m very happy to be part of it.
- It was a good week. I just felt that we were treated as young children a bit too much, and we should have perhaps been allowed more time at night and perhaps been allowed to do more, eg go to the cinema or go into Bristol. I am not sure if one of the aims was to experience university life, but if not next time it might be an idea to have people sharing rooms so that closer links are made. Thank you very much for the experience.
Japanese comments:
- Thank you Dr Albone
- I could learn something about volcano; I enjoyed my workshop very much. Thank you very much for every student.
- It is very useful for me to learn this workshop
- I wish the room has is own bath and toilet
- I’ll study harder, and thank you very much, Eric!!
- Thank you very much, Dr Albone! I really enjoyed the Workshop and learned a lot.!
- I really enjoyed this Workshop. I am glad that I am this age. Thank you very much for everything you’ve done for this Workshop. I do contact with each other and I will study science more and more with what I learned from this Workshop
- thank you very much for your helping. I’m very glad to join in this workshop
- English is difficult; food was not good
- the English students thought I was one of the facilitators and was asking me why I didn’t get any wine! (Workshop dinner)
- I really enjoyed this workshop. Thank you very much!!
- thank you so much. I enjoyed this Workshop. I learned a lot of things of science, culture, life in London (on the way to the Workshop) and so on. And I made friends with students who join this Workshop. I was glad to talk with them. So thank you very much.
- now I’m feeling sad to leave here. I want to meet the members again...
- thank you for all!
- until I came to this workshop, I was very worried about it, whether English for Space Science is difficult, whether I can communicate with member of UK.
