The Workshop; What it achieved...

English and Japanese students pore over geological charts

In summer 2001 sixty students from schools across Britain and Japan met at the University of Bristol

to work in ten small teams on a wide range of real-life science projects which challenged their ingenuity and imagination

guided by experts, confronting scientific challenges to which the answers were not always known

In the process they

shared in cutting edge experiences of science
used their school science in a wider, real-life context
learnt from each other's ways of thinking and doing things
set a precedent for future young scientist contacts between our two nations

Although we did not advertise widely, places available were massively over-subscribed and we had to turn away many really excellent students. This is why we want to share our experience widely.
