About Clifton Scientific Trust

Our Mission

Queen Elizabeth II bestowing an MBE on Trust Director Dr Eric Albone in the 2013 Birthday Honours List

Clifton Scientific Trust was established as a registered charity in 1991 to promote excellence and relevance in science education through innovative pupil programmes of real life scientific exploration and application. We build working partnerships between schools and the wider community so that science is experienced as a creative, questioning human activity. Activities include our innovative post-16 UK-Japan Young Scientists programme and our Meet‑a‑Medic Programme with Bristol primary schools.

Dr Eric Albone was honored to receive the Japan Society Award 2007 for his work in the field of Anglo-Japanese relations.

The achievements of the trust have been formally recognised by the governments of Britain and Japan (Japanese honours).

Origins

Pupils as Scientists, 1993

Clifton Scientific Trust arose from Dr Eric Albone bringing his experience as a research scientist from a career in research into school teaching in Clifton College in the 1980s. At Clifton College, Dr Albone instituted the first Scientist in Residence schemes in recent times. With Royal Society support, he engaged the students in a series of research projects including one in the field of mammalian semiochemistry, his own field of research.

The success of the project, which the students exhibited at the 1986 Royal Society Soirée, convinced us of the great value in enabling students to experience the world of real-life science and engineering for themselves.

Pupils as Scientists, published in 1993, showcases this work.
